"Everything began with a need," recalls Zhang Hua, head of Kaiyao. "It started with a client from our previous business asking if we could help find a type of metal flooring to protect their workshop floor. Without much thought, I said we’d give it a try..."
This attempt turned into months of searching. Unsuitable materials, subpar quality, incorrect sizes, and inadequate safety standards — nothing seemed to fit. "After months of exploration, we gained some understanding of metal flooring," Zhang Hua says. "So, I proposed, 'Why don’t we design it ourselves?' We were novices at the time, so we drafted a rough blueprint and sought help from professional designers and experts. The final version exceeded expectations, and the client immediately ordered 2,000 square meters."
This experience revealed a market opportunity. Zhang Hua and the team began researching by visiting companies, attending exhibitions, and analyzing reports. They discovered that metal flooring was in high demand, offering significant market potential. Thus, Kaiyao officially entered the metal flooring industry.
Metal flooring distinguishes itself from other industrial flooring with its simple installation, lower maintenance costs compared to traditional floor coatings or iron plates, and superior safety.
"Though our first success seemed like a lucky break, entering this field felt daunting," Zhang Hua admits. "But seeing the opportunity, we knew not trying guaranteed failure, while trying gave us a chance at success."
Zhang devoted himself to studying the industry, emphasizing professional learning for both himself and the team. In addition to recruiting experts, he arranged for the training of existing staff through courses led by university professors and industry specialists. "It felt like going back to school," recalls Wu, a design engineer at Kaiyao. "We worked hard to grasp everything quickly, and our collective effort helped us avoid many pitfalls."
Kazuo Inamori believes work refines character, fueled by passion and relentless effort. Kaiyao’s team faced early challenges, especially with mold issues. Theoretical designs failed in production, leaving the team frustrated. Zhang Hua remembers nearly giving up but decided to seek help from mechanical design professors and engineers at national institutes. Their expertise led to breakthroughs, resolving the mold problem after numerous experiments.
With persistence, Kaiyao resolved initial challenges and developed a rigorous process for mold production. "Every mold undergoes extensive testing to ensure quality," Zhang Hua explains. The company now offers a wide range of products, including workshop flooring, industrial flooring, steel flooring, and environmentally friendly metal flooring, along with custom solutions.
Kaiyao adapts to evolving demands, using materials like carbon steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel to enhance durability, safety, and cost-effectiveness. "Despite changes in material preferences, the core need remains: protecting workshop floors and ensuring safe, efficient production," Zhang Hua notes.
Over more than a decade, Kaiyao’s products have entered markets in the U.S., Russia, South Korea, and Kazakhstan, supported by design patents and continuous innovation. The company invests heavily in R&D, production systems, and quality control to achieve industry-leading standards.
